Week 1 Preview: Part 1

Picking up right where we left off at the end of last season, the weekly prediction machine is gearing up for another impressive run. If you rack your brains for just a moment, you’ll remember that mid-season I changed things up with how this weekly post was put together. I was in a terrible slump picking three key matchups, writing in-depth previews, and then only giving scores for the remaining games. After switching to brief previews for each game and a final score, I picked correctly at an astounding rate. Weeks of going 14-2, 13-3, and 15-1 became the norm.

So I think we’ll stick with that until I decide it’s no longer working.

This week is a little strange, though, with the Kick-Off Game coming on a Wednesday–thanks to Roger Goodell doing the incumbent president a favor by moving the game, normally played on a Thursday, back a day so as to not interrupt his convention speech. Rather than rushing my analysis and picks for this week, I’ll start with giving some special attention to the first game of the season.

So without furtherĀ ado, here is the first prediction (not involving the post season) of the 2012 NFL season.

Dallas Cowboys @ New York Giants–Wednesday, September 5, 8:30pm

Answer me this: When’s the last time a Tony Romo-led Cowboy’s team beat the New York Giants? Go ahead, do a little Googling. I’ll wait… Or do you want me to just tell you? OK, fine. It was Week 15 of the 2008 season, in Dallas. A 20-8 victory that came at a time when there was some in-fighting going on because a prima donna wide receiver by the nam Owens wasn’t happy with how few looks he was getting. To find Romo and the Cowboys’ last road win against the Giants you have to go back another year.

I think you see where I’m going with this. But let’s dive a little deeper.

The wide receiving core for this Cowboys team is in shambles. They (Jason Witten, Dez Bryant, Miles Austin, and co.) have seen limited or no action this preseason due to injuries and whatnot, and are bound to show plenty of rust out of the gate.

Defensively, they’ve made moves to specifically counteract what the Giants did to burn them twice in four weeks last season, adding a marquee corner, and moving up in the draft to snag another. I don’t think any of it is going to pay immediate dividends in this early-season matchup.

New York is coming off of a season in which they were 9-7, but like the Green Bay Packers the year prior, they got hot at exactly the right time and rattled off six straight wins en route to their second Super Bowl title in five years.

The title came with no thanks to a running game that ranked dead last in yards-per-game last season, but could see improvement with Ahmad Bradshaw being the lone featured-back and not having to split carries with the inconsistent (and departed) Brandon Jacobs.

Met Life Stadium will be rocking from the get-go with the unveiling of the Championship Banner. Add to that the fact that it’s Cowboys they get to humiliate on opening weekendmid-week-day, and it all adds up to an excellent start to the season for the men in blue. Oh, and the home team in these pre-Sunday-kickoff kickoff specials (this will be the ninth time the defending champ hosts this game)? 8-0.

Giants win 30-13

Stay tuned for the remainder of my picks later in the week.
