Notre Dame Head Coach Brian Kelly made it official tonight that he’ll be staying in South Bend after a very brief flirtation with the Philadelphia Eagles. The decision was revealed on Twitter by the ND athletic department.
“This week, I had an incredible opportunity to speak with one of the premier organizations in sports about becoming their head coach,” Kelly said in a statement on WNDU TV. “Like every kid who has ever put on a pair of football cleats, I have had thoughts about being a part of the NFL. However, after much reflection and conversation with those closest to me, I have decided to remain at Notre Dame.
(Before I go on, I’d just like to express my deepest gratitude towards Kelly for calling the Eagles one of the “premier organizations in sports.” Gee, thanks, Brian. Your words are too kind. Moving on…)
And with that, the Eagles again were left out in the cold by a college coach–the third such time it’s happened during their search to replace Andy Reid. I’m not upset at the fact that they won’t be hiring a collegiate-level coach, but I am tired of them being used by those coaches to get a cheap raise out of their institutions. I get the sense that Jeffrey Lurie is as well. The team put out this statement on their website almost immediately after Kelly’s decision was made public.
“There is no question we spent a considerable amount of time and effort looking at who we thought were the best collegiate candidates for our head coaching job. We did so knowing that there was a remote chance that these coaches would leave their current posts.
We understood that going into the process, but we wanted to leave no stone unturned while trying to find the best head coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. We have no regrets about the effort we made in that direction and we will continue to proceed as planned in our search.”
Sounds more like something a whiny prom king says when he realizes he ain’t getting any from the queen, despite all the wining and dining he shelled out for with the hard earned money he got from mowing lawns all summer and shoveling driveways in the winter. Sorry bud, his dad has to tell the devastated young man. There are plenty of fish in the sea, just keep searching and I’m sure you’ll find the right one, or at least eventually be forced to just settle on some below average gal who will surely under perform and never meet all of your expectations.
Such is the life of an Eagles fan right now.
Just find me a damn coach.
